This Week's News About Aging:
Boomers
Fight Aging But Take Only Baby Steps to Good Health
While they express anxiety about aging, America's 75 million Baby
Boomers as a group are only taking baby steps to good health. Half of them
confess they aren't eating as well as they should, and one in three say
they will act to alter their diets if diagnosed with a disease. And a
startling 43 percent claim they would rather eat what they want and live
just 10 more years.
Members of America's largest generation -- who are between ages 38 and 56
-- are uneasy about aging because they fear losing attractiveness and
contracting a debilitating disease. They also aren't very confident about
their ability to manage their own health concerns as they age.
Annual
Report Shows Overall Decline in U.S. Cancer Death Rates
Cancer Burden is Expected to Rise with an Aging Population
New data for 1999 show that death rates for all cancers combined continued
to decline in the United States. However, the number of cancer cases can
be expected to increase because of the growth and aging of the population
in coming decades, according to a report released today. The "Annual
Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1973-1999, Featuring
Implications of Age and Aging on the U.S. Cancer Burden" is published
in the May 15, 2002 (Vol. 94, No. 10, pages 2766-2792), issue of Cancer.*
"The continuing decline in the rate of cancer deaths once again
affirms the progress we've made against cancer, but the report also
highlights the need for an acceleration of research as the population of
the United States ages," said NCI Director Andrew C. von Eschenbach,
M.D.
Prescription
Dermatological Drugs Market to Top $10 Billion by 2006
The worldwide market for prescription dermatological drugs stood
at nearly $7 billion in 2001 and will continue to expand at a healthy pace
to surpass $10 billion by 2006, according to a new study released today
from Kalorama Information and available from MarketResearch.com .
The new study entitled The Worldwide Market for Prescription
Dermatological Drugs revealed that the hair loss and hair removal segment
posted the highest growth rates over the past 5 years, growing at nearly
55% because of the introduction of product such as Vaniqa and Propecia.
However, the most dynamic segment going forward appears to be the
anti-aging segment, where botulinum agents, namely Botox, will change the
competitive landscape, according to the study.
